The turtle is most often associated with steadfastness and tranquility amongst many different cultures.  Turtle tattoos often represent bravery, endurance, guts, inner knowledge, recovery, safety, security, perseverance and longevity.

Another advantage to turtle tattoos is the opportunity for the tattoo artist to place a tattoo within a tattoo.  Many tattoo artists like to make use of the shell of the turtle to add another design or symbol on it.  For example, if you got a turtle tattoo, you could easily fit the Japanese character for strength or any other character you wanted onto the shell.
